AFS project volumes

Projects and individuals may request AFS space for their work. A project space allocation may be comprised of multiple volumes so long as the currrent requirements are met.

Space and Volume Requirements

  • Project space allocation may be created up to a maximum size of 50 GB.
  • Project space allocation requirements in excess of 50 GB will incur a charge.
Contact help+@cs.cmu.edu for these requests and relevant costing information.
  • Project volumes may be created up to a maximum size of 25 GB.
  • Volumes receive nightly backups unless otherwise requested.

Requesting project AFS space

To request project AFS space, send the following information to help@cs.cmu.edu:

  • The project name.
  • The name of the faculty sponsor for the project.
  • The SCS user ids of two people who will be the "project administrators" for this space. These people will be able to use jeeves to allocate volumes and otherwise manage the space.
  • The name of the initial volume to be created. Names can be up to 11 letters long, and include "-" and digits in the name (e.g. project-1, project-2, etc).

Managing project AFS space

Tips for project volume administrators

Using Jeeves, project volume administrators can create AFS volumes and decrease or increase quotas for their volumes as needed (up to the maximum AFS space available to the project). Past experience has shown that it's best if administrators choose consistant naming schemes for volumes, and create volumes and allocate quota as needed, to avoid creating volumes and allocating quota that may not be used. Some popular naming conventions are to use project_name-N for volume names, as in the example above, project_name-userid for a particular user's project space, and project_name-src for a source code repository.

Using Jeeves to manage project space

Jeeves is a telnet-based service that allows people to perform many common administrative tasks without having to request help from SCS Facilities. Among these are common project volume administration tasks. See the Jeeves documentation for details.
