Thank you for your interest in joining our group. In short, each year we usually accept * 1-2 new phd students (CSD-phd or MLD-phd, only) * no summer interns (sorry...) * 1-3 postdocs LONG VERSION ----------------------------- To INCOMING grad students, looking for ADVISOR: We ONLY consider people who have been admitted * to the PHD program of * SCS/CSD or SCS/MLD To applicants for GRADUATE ADMISSION: SHORT version: There is little I can do. LONG version: The decisions are made by the admission committee, after input from faculty. Thus, faculty like me, can not give you any guarantee - only hints to maximize your chances for acceptance - see below. VERY IMPORTANT: My best advice is for you to try to obtain a recommendation letter that compares you favorably to an earlier CMU graduate student, or equivalent (stanford, mit, berkeley, cornell, etc). Points of reference, eg.: * Jimeng Sun (BSc: HKUST) www.cs.cmu.edu/~jimeng/ * Hanghang Tong (BSc: Tsinghua) www.cs.cmu.edu/~htong/ * Fan Guo (BSc: Tsinghua) www.cs.cmu.edu/~fanguo/ * Lei Li (BSc: JiaoTong) www.cs.cmu.edu/~leili/ * Aditya Prakash (BSc: IIT Mumbai) www.cs.cmu.edu/~badityap/ * Jia-Yu (Tim) Pan (BSc: NCTU) www.cs.cmu.edu/~jypan/ * ... etc ... To applicants for SUMMER INTERNSHIP: Unfortunately, we have no such positions. (Too much travel during the summer - too little face-to-face time, to make it worthwhile for you to go through all the trouble of relocation, visa etc.) To applicants for POSTDOC POSITION: Possible, if ALL these conditions hold: (a) you have secured independent funding covering all expenses AND (b) your ex-advisor is willing to compare you favorably to an earlier CMU graduate, or equivalent (berkeley, mit, etc). AND (c) there is enough overlap among our *current* research interests (graphs, tensors, time series, anomaly detection) ------ Christos Faloutsos
