She gave me the name of Jim Fischer, who is the AT&T Unix licensing manager, who is reachable at 800-828-UNIX. I talked with him, and found that things are pretty much as we thought they should be: 1) In order to read the code for avfront, third parties must be C++ commercial source licensees. This costs $2000 per CPU. We should verify this with AT&T before sending anyone our code. 2) If they turn it into a product and start selling binaries, there is an additional charge of $50 to $500 dollars per CPU due AT&T, depending on the number of users of the machine it is put on. 3) CMU is free to make any additional financial arrangements with third parties. 4) Jim would be happy to offer any assistance he can in these matters. Hope this helps. Date: Tue, 05 Mar 91 14:54:28 EST From: Howard.Wactlar@WACTLAR.FAC.CS.CMU.EDU Jeanette, You've actually asked more than once. Apologies for not having responded yet. I have been trying for many months to resolve our various export problems, and always think that I'm close to resolution and a positive answer. Obviously, I'm not; I'm just deluding myself. We've had tremendous problems with export and getting explicit Darpa permission. We can't seem to resolve a standard process for permission. So, in terms of what permissions we do have, we can ship what are considered research results to anywhere in Australia, Britian, Canada under the provisions of the ABCA treaties, but need a license to legally ship elsewhere . Darpa has to give its permission for Commerce to grant us the license. So, for now, NO for Taiwan, YES for Canada. We've cleared Mach for general export, are now working on Soar and Garnet. I'll be happy to add Avalon/C++ to the list. (Are there other distributions you may want to make available overseas?). Most places probably already have Mach, but not Camelot. My bet is that most places already have an AT&T license for C++. I think I would assume that it isn't. If we call AT&T to validate the fact that the CPU's that the people interested in Avalon want to run it on are licensed, we can check then to see if the version matters.
