The Czech Minister of Transportation, Jan Strasky, proposed on Saturday, January 8 that the State buy back the shares (just less than 20%) held by Air France and the Reserve Bank/deposit accounts in the national airline, CSA, so that they could be sold "to another partner, probably a bank." Since mid-1992, Air France and the Reserve Bank, on the one hand, and the European Development Bank (Banque Europeenne de Developpement - BERD), on the other, hold 38.2% of CSA's capital, the rest being held by Czech interests, particularly by the national endowment Fund. This 38.2% represents a contribution of $60 million, divided in equal parts between the French and the BERD. Air France's investment only represents $18 million, $15 million of which are in the form of services rendered, those of its partner, the Reserve Bank, then totaling $12 million. Since, Air France and the BERD requested an expert accountant from the firm of Ernst and Jung, who concluded that CSA had been overvalued by $26 million (148 million francs). The study led them to ask the Czech government to recapitalize CSA at this level. However, the government was then planning to modify certain rules of the game of the airline's operation. CSA is going through serious financial difficulties and has suffered significant losses in the past two years. As such, it is in dire need of fresh money. Notably, it has renovated its fleet, which consists of old Tupolev 134s, financing 2 Airbus 310-300s, judged to be in unsatisfactory condition, five Boeing 737-500s and four ATR 72s with leasing contracts. On Thursday, January 6, the General Director of the Czech company, Georges Vejdovsky, resigned during an extraordinary general assembly of the shareholders, which was held because of the difference of opinion between Air France and the Czech government regarding his nomination. The next day, the Minister of Transportation brought up the possibility of a repurchase of Air France's contribution.
