Grand Opening

The Oklahoman
2 July, 1990

Officials from five Indian tribes and the Narconon drug treatment center celebrate the center's opening Saturday. The controversial facility near Newkirk opened in early June and now has 20 patients, a center official said Sunday. It has 100 beds, and the group hopes to be able to handle 1,000 patients by 1994. The center has come under considerable fire from local officials, who say Narconon has ties to the Church of Scientology. Center officials deny that but acknowledge that Narconon uses principles developed by the late L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Church of Scientology.
