Project Description and Guidelines

Project reports are due Friday, May 2. Send me electronic versions.

Each student should prepare a report that provides a guide to a particular research topic in self-healing systems. The report should be between 5 and 15 pages, and contain the following content.

  1. Topic Overview:
    1. Include a description of the topic with some general notes about its historical significance (if any), and the kind of issues it addresses. Attempt to characterize the topic in terms of the dimensions:
  2. General Overview of the Research:
    1. Provide a discussion of the various kinds of results in this area. Give enough perspective that the reader has a sense of what has been done in this area, and what kinds of research questions are important
  3. Annotated Bibliography:
    1. Recommended reading: If you were to read only one (or possibly two or three) papers in this area what should you read. If you were to read 3-5 papers, what would they be. For each paper provide a paragraph of summary text and say why it is important.

Additional readings: Include the main papers in the area, with a paragraph describing what is important about each. Note that all entries should have full bibliographic citations, and preferrably web sites where the papers can be obtained.

It will be a bonus if you can discuss the material in terms of the concepts developed in class: In particular, try to be specific about the use and placement of models (are the internalized or externalized), the kinds of models used, the placement of translators (abstractors and refiners), the IOMA building blocks, the use of layers, etc. One way that might help think about this is to ask the question: viewed as a component composition framework, what style is being advocated (if any).
