Using Andrew (in Windows)

Uploading to Andrew

Before logging off a cluster machine, you must save any material that you will want to work on again (like programs that you are developing). Doing so ensures that your work is not lost and that no one else can steal your programs. Since the Wean 5419 machines are Macs, you will have to understand how to upload project folders to Andrew on the Mac. However, if you're using Windows machines in some other campus cluster, you still have to understand how to upload files using Windows.

If you own a Windows computer, you will still want to save your work on Andrew (in case you, accidently delete it, for example). If you don't have a lot of space on your Andrew account, first zip your project folder into a single zip file and upload the zip file.

On Windows machines, use the WS_FTP LE application to interact with the Andrew file system. On some cluster machines, the application WS_FTP32(Not Kerberized) is available instead. The programs are similar.

To start WS_FTP LE from a cluster machine, click Start and then select Programs | Communications | WS_FTP95 LE (on your home machine, you may have a version of this program with a slightly different name). You should see a window that looks like the following.

When you have filled in your Andrew User ID: and Password, click Ok to start the connection. If you filled in all the information correctly, you should be connected to your Andrew file space and see a window that looks like the following. Information about your computer will appear in the left half of the window; information about your Andrew file system will appear in the right half of the window.

At the top are the names of the current folders on both sides of the connection; the bottom left and right windows contain the names of files on both sides.

Downloading from Andrew
To work on any material that you previously saved to your Andrew file space, you must first download it to your local system (typically to the desktop). To retrieve your work, use the same starting sequence that you used to upload to Andrew. However, now you want to reverse the process:
First locate the information in the right window (Remote Site) and then determine where you want to put the files in your left window (Local System). On PC's. C:\TEMP is a good place to put things. Then press the transfer  icon <- in the center column.
