Biography

Albert Corbett is a Senior Research Scientist in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute and co-director of the Pittsburgh Advanced Cognitive Tutor Center at CMU. The PACT Center is a team of psychologists, computer scientists, classroom teachers, post docs, graduate students, research programmers, staff research associates and undergraduate assistants that has developed, piloted and evaluated three high school mathematics courses employing intelligent computer tutors. These courses are in use by about 150,000 students in more than 1000 schools around the country in the 2002-2003 school year. The PACT Center has developed and evaluated a cognitive tutor courses for programming and three years of middle school math and is developing a cognitive tutor for genetics problem solving.

Dr. Corbett's degrees are in cognitive psychology and his expertise is in cognitive models of problem solving and in the empirical evaluation of computer environments. He has conducted extensive empirical evaluations of students learning programming and mathematics with intelligent computer tutors. More generally he has supervised graduate student evaluations of data analysis, programming, spreadsheet and authoring environments. Dr. Corbett is a frequent participant in workshops that define national and international educational technology research agenda. In 2000 he was awarded an Allen Newell Medal for Research Excellence by the CMU School of Computer Science.
