1 Introduction

The Linux operating system[Lin], in a preliminary release of version 2.4 at the time of this writing, is available on at least twelve separate processor architectures, including the Advanced RISC Machines[ARMa] family. The StrongARM processor, a high-performance, low-power part based around the SA-1 (similar to the ARM8) core, is supported by a separate architecture sub-port within the ARM Linux development project[ARMb]. Prior to the development efforts discussed in this report, Linux was available on the SA-110 and SA-1100 processors in a variety of systems, such as the Brutus development board and the Compaq (née Digital Equipment Corporation) Itsy[Itsa]. This report describes the steps taken by the ARM Linux community to support the SA-1110[SA1a] and SA-1111[SA1b] in the kernel, and focuses in particular on the contributions of the Wearable Group[Wea] at Carnegie Mellon University.
