Research by Tom Mitchell, chair of the Machine Learning Department, and Marcel Just of Psychology on how the mind encodes meaning will be featured on the Oct. 19 edition of CBS News’ “60 Minutes.”  The report by correspondent Lesley Stahl will explore how the use of machine learning and language technologies may someday make it possible to use brain scans to identify thoughts.

Lunar Prospecting Robot To Be Field Tested on Hawaii’s Mauna Kea --NASA Rover Was Developed by Robotics Institute! The cool, rocky slopes of Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano that is Hawaii’s highest mountain, will serve as a stand-in for the moon as researchers from the Robotics Institute, NASA and other organizations test a robot designed for lunar prospecting. 2008 Alumni Awards Honor Sindhu, Ganassi, Waltons! Pradeep Sindhu, who founded Juniper Networks after earning his master’s and doctorate degrees in computer science at Carnegie Mellon, is one of 19 alumni and honorary alumni who will be recognized with 2008 Alumni Awards. Three invaluable supporters of Carnegie Mellon’s Tartan Racing team – Chip Ganassi and Joseph C. and Molly Walton – will be named honorary alumni at the ceremony in Rangos Hall in the University Center, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 24. Jeannette M. Wing, President’s Professor of Computer Science, was honored by Gov. Ed Rendell and First Lady Judge Marjorie O. Rendell as one of seven Distinguished Daughters of Pennsylvania during a luncheon at the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg. Wing, now serving as assistant director for the National Science Foundation’s Computer and Information Science and Engineering directorate, was cited for her work in trustworthy computing, formal methods, programming languages, concurrent and distributed systems and software engineering, as well as her vision to make “computational thinking” a common part of science and math education.
