Philadelphia and New York, 2003

(Dec. 2003) We visited Philadelphia and New York during the period around Chritsmas and New Year.

I first fell in love with Phily when I watched the movie of the same name by Tom Hanks. The City of Brotherhood. Gray, reserved, melancholy. They are the words the emerge when I thought of Phily then -- perhaps the "Street of Philadelphia" by Bruce Springsteen also helped. I was quite wrong. Phily is in fact a lovely place. It is large enough to have the convenience of a major city, without being too big to be convenient. It is blessed by its rich history and culture --- the Liberty Bell, the Museum of Fine Art, the Rodin Museum, to name a few, but relieved of the burden of being packed by tourists. On the culinary side, it is also a heavyweight contender --- with offerings from the cheecesteaks around every corner to the lengendary Morimoto Restaurant, Phily is easily one of the best places to eat in the nation.

New York holds a special place in my heart. To me, there simply isn't any other place as great as New York. What else can I say? This is a city that you either love or hate. Yes, Paris is maginificant, but only New York is the Capital of the World.
