Introduction
The End System Multicast streaming tool is built on top of Apple's Quicktime
streaming technology; unfortunately, Apple currently does not provide a Quicktime
player for Linux. We have looked into open source or freeware media players
for Linux. Unfortunately, so far we have not found a player that can handle
RTP streaming and the necessary Quicktime audio/video codecs. If you know of
any suitable player, please email us at esm-help@lists.andrew.cmu.edu,
we will greatly appreciate your suggestions.
In the meantime, in order to enable Quicktime in Linux, we will leverage the
CodeWeavers CrossOver Plugin software to allow a standard Quicktime player for
Microsoft Windows to run under Linux. Please use the following instructions
to set it up.
Step 1: Instaling CodeWeavers Crossover Plugin
- Download the CodeWeavers Crossover Plugin (~ 8MB) from
http://www.codeweavers.com/products/crossover/download_demo.php?dl=1
- Make sure you are not performing the following instructions as the
superuser (root). Superuser (root) installation is not supported.
- Go to where it was downloaded and
Type: sh install-crossover-plugin-1.1.3-demo.sh
- When prompted about installing for a single user
Click: "Yes"
- Read the license agreement. This is a demo version that you may use for
up to 30 days. We are looking into open source or freeware Quicktime player
alternatives but currently none give us the seamless integration we are looking
for.
- If you agree with their EULA
Click: "I agree"
- Next, you must select the install path. You can install it anywhere you
like with some words of caution. We've had problems installing it on AFS and
we suspect this may hold true for other remote file systems, so try to install
it locally if at all possible.
- After selecting the installation path
Click: "Begin install" to begin the installation
- Next, it will say "Congratulations the installation was successfully
completed!"
Click: “Configure now” and continue on to the next section
Step 2: Configuring CodeWeavers Crossover Plugin
- The installer will exit and then load up the configuration utility for Crossover
Plugin
- Read the welcome screen then
Click: “Next”
- The installation of the plugin into your web browsers doesn’t affect
ESM’s use of CodeWeavers Crossover Plugin so
Click: “Next”
- The next screen asks if you have any proxies, again this information will
not affect ESM’s use of CodeWeavers Crossover Plugin so
Click: “Next”
- If QuickTime 6 isn't highlighted (it’s highlighted by default) click
on it and then
Click: “Add”
- A dialog will appear describing what is about to be installed.
Click: "Install"
- CodeWeavers Crossover Plugin’s configuration utility should now download
Apple QuickTime 6 for Windows from apple.com. After the download completes
the Windows QuickTime installer should then launch and look like a standard
Windows installer.
- Go through the QuickTime install just as you would in Windows, but when
asked where the install should go make sure you don’t change the destination
from its default
C:\Program Files\QuickTime
- After the installation has been completed Crossover will then display an
installation report just
Click: "Ok" and continue on
- Quicktime should now be installed. In the "PluginSetup" window,
Quicktime's status should be "Installed."
Click: "Finish" to exit the Crossover Plugin Setup utility
